Symbolism of the Koi

In Chinese culture, the koi fish (鲤鱼, lǐyú) is far more than a beautiful creature — it’s a living emblem of prosperity, perseverance, and abundance. The word “yú” (fish) sounds identical to “surplus” or “abundance” (余) in Mandarin, which is why koi are often seen as carriers of endless wealth and good fortune.

The Tradition

The traditional saying “年年有余” (nián nián yǒu yú) means “may you have abundance every year.” That’s why koi are painted on Lunar New Year decorations, embroidered on clothing, and sculpted into gold ornaments — they represent continuous gain and overflowing prosperity.

Koi in Feng Shui

In feng shui and symbolism, the more koi or carp you have, the more wealth and abundance you attract — each fish multiplying fortune and amplifying your financial “flow.” A pond full of koi is believed to bring balance, peace, and compounding prosperity, mirroring how wealth grows when energy flows freely.
